“Hypnopompia”

A Solo Exhibition of Artwork by Danielle Branchaud

Artist statement, bio, and show description:

There is an entire realm of consciousness that exists between realities, and it is ripe for exploration. Uncovering what exists there is an intensive and unpredictable process, but it is the sole purpose of the Hypnopompia series: to bring those feelings, memories, and dreams to life.

Hypnopompia is defined as the state between sleep and waking, where the dream world spills into our reality, just enough that it has been known to cause hallucinations – such as night terrors – or waking dreams. Hypnopompic states don’t commonly occur in everyone. It is a unique experience, that for this artist has led to a personal journey of pulling apart the visions that have come to her over the years. Developing an ever more intimate theme to her work, Danielle Branchaud is now preparing to present a new series that dives into the deepest recesses of the human experience, invoking emotions and imagery that are bound to provoke a myriad of sensations. While the overall theme involves the experience of dreaming, there are a variety of symbols and subjects that lead directly to into her own memories – and her perception of life, love, pain and connection.

After nearly two decades of exhibiting artwork across Southwest Florida, Danielle Branchaud has earned a place among some of the most notable surreal artists in the region. Her work transcends the human perspective into something much deeper – purposefully voyaging into realms of thought and feeling that are unsettling to most. There is no limit to the territory that she will traverse with her paintings, using an intimate and efficient method of painting figures and dreamscapes in acrylics, while also occasionally experimenting with mixed media and sculpture. She has exhibited her artwork in the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center, Alliance for the Arts, Arts for ACT, DAAS CO-OP, and other galleries/venues in Fort Myers, Naples, Bonita Springs, Sarasota, and Miami. While still utilizing her home studio, she also has a studio space at the Union Artist Studios on the Alliance for the Arts campus – that can be visited by the public on select days of the week – where she is often working on large scale and complex pieces of art for this series and others.

The Hypnopompia exhibition will feature upwards of 40 new paintings, including a painted wall tapestry, collaborative works, as well as uniquely constructed suspended wire sculpture. The opening reception is designed to be an immersive experience, with a curated music playlist and a special performance piece – featuring collaborating performers Sonia Rosa and Brandon Yates along with several others and the artist herself – that will occur at 8:30pm. The artwork, and overall experience, of Hypnopompia will leave its audience captivated – with lasting impressions upon everyone who attends. Join us in the Grand Atrium of the Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center on February 7th from 6-10pm during Fort Myers Art Walk for the opening of this auspicious show.

The undertaking of this project would not have been possible without the honor of receiving an Individual Artist Grant from the City of Fort Myers in 2024. Funding for artists and the arts is essential to the cultural progress of a society. The artist and everyone involved in the production of Hypnopompia is beyond grateful for the opportunities and support that we receive from our community.
